Neuropsychopharmacology in Historical Perspective
Education in the Field in the Post-Neuropsychopharmacology Era
Background to An Oral History of the First Fifty Years
Starting Up (Volume One): 1. The Interviews
(Bulletin 33)
An Oral History of Neuropsychopharmacology The First Fifty Years is a 10 volumes series published in 2011 by the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) in which the edited transcripts of biographical interviews collected over a period of 14 years (from December 1994 to December 2008) are presented (Ban 2011).
The material is based on 235 videotaped interviews conducted by 66 interviewers – most of them peers, knowledgeable in the same field of inquiry – with 213 interviewees who contributed to the development of neuropsychopharmacology during the “neurotransmitter era,” the first epoch in its history (Ban and Ucha Udabe 2006).

Of the 235 interviews, 212 were done at ACNP’s annual meetings and 23 between meetings; 229 involved a single interviewer, five involved two interviewers and one was a group (Belmaker, Carlsson, Langer, Robbins and Zohar) interview. Some interviewees were the subjects of several interviews.
The taped interviews were transcribed and after ascertaining that the transcribed text in each interview was fully comprehensible, were assigned on the basis of their content to one of the 10 prospective volumes by Thomas A. Ban, the series editor.
The series, coedited by a team of volume editors covers the first 50 years in the history of neuropsychopharmacology. Volume 1 (Starting Up) deals with the state of the art in psychiatry and pharmacology at the time of the emergence of neuropsychopharmacology (Shorter 2011); and Volumes 2 through 7 (Neurophysiology, Neuropharmacology, Psychopharmacology, Neuropsychopharmacology, Addiction, and Special Areas) with various well-defined areas of research, clinical activities and education in the field (Blackwell 2011a; Fink 2011; Gershon 2011; Kleber 2011; Levine 2011 Sulser2011). Volume 8 includes Diverse Topics in which the contents of the interviews were outside the scope of the first seven volumes (Salzman 2011); Volume 9 (Update) is focused on the changes over the years as reflected in a second interview with the same subject (Blackwell 2011b) and Volume 10 on the history of ACNP (Katz 2011). The transcripts of Volumes 1 through 8 are based on first interviews and of Volume 9 on second (update) interviews. Volume 10 includes, in addition to interview transcripts, material relating to the history of ACNP excerpted from transcripts presented in prior volumes.
Introductions by some of the volume editors provide an overview of developments in the particular area within neuropsychopharmacology covered in that volume and a Preface by the series editor that opens each volume provides the necessary background information to determine the place of interviewees’ contributions in the stream of history. These 10 Prefaces, complemented with an Overview beginning the first volume and a Post-Script in the last, draw together the contributions presented in the various volumes into a history of the field. Background to An Oral History of the First Fifty Years is based also on this material.
