In Memory of Andras Perenyi
George Gardos
Dr. Andras Perenyi, a member of INHN, passed away in August 2016 after a relatively brief illness with cancer at age 67. He trained and worked in his native Hungary until 1992 as a psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist.
I met Andras for the first time in 1980 in Belmont, Massachusetts, USA, where he spent a year as a Research Fellow at McLean’s Hospital. We collaborated over a period of 10 years in a tardive dyskinesia research program in which we compared the effects of chronic exposure to neuroleptics in patients treated in Hungary and in the United States.
Andras relocated to Melbourne, Australia, in 1992 where he continued his professional activities in research and teaching at Monash Medical School. He also had a clinical practice until terminal illness.
We remained close friends and met at least once a year at the annual meeting of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology that he regularly attended. He maintained his collaboration with Hungarian colleagues and was on the editorial and advisory boards of several Hungarian psychiatric journals.
