            The biography of the Danish psychiatrist  Carl Lange by Schioldann  fills a gap in the English literature of a significant figure  in the history  of psychiatry. His expertise and contributions spanned many areas in psychology and neurophysiology outlined in the story of his life. He is an important figure in the history of lithium advocating the use of lithium in the treatment of depression outlined in a lecture in 1866 both in the acute depression and prophylaxis of periodic episodes.
