Jose de Leon: Training psychiatrists to think like pharmacologists
28. Personalized medicine in psychiatry

Samuel Gershon’s comment

Personalized medicine is a popular talking point but to implement it you have to have, as the author insists, the necessary information on: 1. mechanisms (pathophysiology) of the illness; 2. specific genetic substrate to target; 3. biomarkers for the illness; and 4. mode (mechanism) of action of the treatment. Well, we really don’t have any of these in psychiatry and in fact there is a major debate on the unreliability of the diagnosis of depression, etc.
