Eric Konofal: Biographic Sketch
Eric Konofal was born in Vendôme, France, in 1967. He was trained in the University of Pierre and Marie Curie, Paris, France, where he received both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. He was appointed senior physician and researcher in neurosciences at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department, Robert Debré Hospital (Assistance-Publique Hôpitaux de Paris). Konofal became a principal clinical investigator in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacogenetics in 2001.
His research interest is focused on brain- and iron-dopamine interactions. Konofal initiated the first studies on iron and its role in pathophysiology of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and has explored the relationship between iron and brain functioning. In recent years, he has become interested in rediscovering old alertness-promoting agents and psychostimulants (mazindol, phacetoperane) and in repositioning them for use in pharmacotherapy of ADHD, narcolepsy or hypersomnnias.
Konofal is also a medical historian focused on ADHD and is completing the writing of the history of ADHD and neuro-stimulants in 19th century France.
